TURTLE WATCH

Protecting Coastal Life: Meet the Sunset Beach Turtle Watch Program

Nestled along the tranquil shoreline of North Carolina, Sunset Beach is more than just a beautiful vacation spot—it’s also home to one of nature’s most incredible events: sea turtle nesting season. And at the heart of this coastal miracle is the Sunset Beach Turtle Watch Program.

🫶 A Mission Rooted in Conservation

The Sunset Beach Turtle Watch Program (SBTWP) is a volunteer-driven organization dedicated to the protection, preservation, and education of sea turtle activity along the Sunset Beach coast. Each year, from May through October, the program monitors the beach for nesting activity, protects fragile turtle nests, and ensures hatchlings have the best possible chance to reach the ocean.

🌊 What They Do:

  • Locate and protect sea turtle nests
  • Monitor hatchings and document nesting data
  • Educate the public about sea turtles and coastal conservation
  • Promote safe beachfront practices during nesting season

🐢 Why It Matters:
All sea turtle species in U.S. waters are listed as either endangered or threatened. Without the dedicated work of groups like SBTWP, these majestic creatures face even greater risks from habitat loss, pollution, artificial lighting, and human disturbance.

📍 How You Can Help:

  • Volunteer your time during the nesting season
  • Donate to support conservation efforts
  • Adopt a nest as a symbolic way to contribute
  • Follow turtle-friendly beach practices (like turning off lights at night and keeping the beach clean)
